CS2 Cases & Collections
135 places a CS2 skin can come from: 42 weapon cases and 93 map and operation collections. Every skin in the game comes from somewhere: a case you open with a key, or a collection tied to a map or an operation. Pick a source below to see everything that drops from it, what it is worth now and which combos use it.
Weapon cases
Bought or dropped in game, opened with a key. Every case has a knife or glove as its rare special.
Map & operation collections
Tied to a map or an operation. These drop as you play, no key involved, and they hold no knives.
Nothing matches that name.
Cases, collections and packages are not the same thing
People use the three words interchangeably and then wonder why a knife never comes out of their souvenir package. The difference is worth knowing before you spend anything.
Cases need a key
A case drops for free while you play, but opening it costs a key bought from the in-game store. The pool is fixed and published, and every case carries a rare special item, meaning a knife or a pair of gloves, at a much lower rate than the weapon skins. Anything from a case can also come out as StatTrak.
Collections drop from the map or the operation
A collection is tied to a place rather than a container. Play the map, and its skins can drop directly at the end of a match, no key needed. That also means no knives: map collections top out at Covert weapon skins, which is why the expensive half of a set almost always comes from a case instead.
Souvenir packages carry the event with them
These are handed out during tournament broadcasts and hold one item from that map's collection, with team, player and event stickers already applied. The stickers cannot be removed and the item is never StatTrak, so a souvenir is worth what its stickers and its wear are worth, not what the plain skin trades for.
Why the source matters when you are building a set
Skins from the same collection were drawn by the same artists to a shared palette, so pairing inside one collection is the easiest way to make a loadout look deliberate. It is also the cheapest: a map collection is full of Industrial and Mil-Spec finishes that cost very little, and they sit next to expensive gloves without looking out of place.
Common questions
- What is the difference between a CS2 case and a collection?
- A case is a container you open with a purchased key, and it always includes a knife or glove as its rare special. A collection is a drop pool attached to a map or an operation, it needs no key, and it contains no knives or gloves.
- Can you get a knife from a map collection?
- No. Knives and gloves only come from cases as the rare special item. Map and operation collections stop at Covert weapon skins, so no amount of playing a map will drop a knife from it.
- Are souvenir skins worth more than normal ones?
- It depends entirely on the stickers. A souvenir with sought-after player stickers from a famous match can be worth many times the plain skin, while an ordinary one is often worth less, because souvenirs cannot be StatTrak and the stickers cannot be removed.
- How do trade up contracts use collections?
- A trade up takes ten skins of the same rarity and returns one skin of the next rarity up, drawn from the collections the ten inputs came from. That is why people track which collections have a cheap route into an expensive tier.
- Which collection should I build a loadout around?
- Pick one whose palette you like and that has a cheap Industrial or Mil-Spec weapon you would actually use, then spend the budget on gloves. Every collection page here lists its skins with live prices so you can see where the cheap half is.
